A “Draft Guru” as Sean Marks’ Right-Hand Man

It was one of the last unknowns in the Nets' organizational chart. As reported by the New York Postthe New York franchise has promoted BJ Johnson as assistant GM, alongside Sean Marks.

Described by the local daily as a ” Draft Guru “, BJ Johnson arrived with the Nets shortly after Sean Marks was hired in 2016. He has held several positions around player development, outside of his work with USA Basketball programs for more than a decade.

In his new role in Brooklynin addition to leading scouting, BJ Johnson will continue to oversee draft preparation. And this after playing a major role in the evaluation and selection of a number of young Nets prospects, including Nic Claxton (31st pick in 2019).

I applaud our selection process. BJ Johnson has led this process over the last few years, he has done an excellent job of evaluating and searching for Nic “, Sean Marks recently said, speaking of the pivot, one of the Nets' best draft picks in recent years, along with Cam Thomas.

It should be remembered that this promotion is linked to recent internal movements at the Nets, notably the departure of Jeff Peterson, assistant GM since 2019, who left for the Hornets to become their president.

Draft-wise, we want to lean on BJ Johnson. BJ has led our draft the last few years. So there's going to be more pressure and more responsibility for a lot of the guys internally here. “, continued Sean Marks, whose offseason, on the players' side, was mainly marked by the loss of Mikal Bridges.
