While the NBA and several franchises will pay tribute this season to Bill Walton, Jerry West and Al Attles, who died in recent months, the city of Boston is not left out with a massive tribute to Bill Russell.
City Mayor Michelle Wu announced that the bridge connecting the Charlestown, West End and North End neighborhoods was being renamed the William Felton “Bill” Russell Bridge in honor of the Celtics legend. This bridge is located near the TD Garden, Jayson Tatum's teammates' room, and it is in work since 2018.
Inauguration Monday
Pending its reopening next spring, a ceremony will take place on Monday, in the presence of Jeannine, Russell's widow, Mayor Michelle Wu, Steve Pagliuca, co-owner of the Celtics, and several players and managers of the franchise.
“The renaming of the bridge will honor Bill Russell's dedication to civil rights and the advancement of Boston's youth and young athletes,” announced the councilor.
Died at the age of 88 in 2022, the legendary pivot already had a statue on the town hall square and his number, 6, is retired in all NBA franchises.
