By chaining three wins in a row at the end of November, for the third time this season, the 76ers thought they had turned positive for good. It was without counting on the short “road trip” that awaited them. Three games, in Cleveland, Memphis and Houston for… three losses.
What do these three defeats have in common? Doc Rivers’ men were largely dominated in the rebound: 10 less than the Cavs (30-40), 15 less than the Grizzlies and finally 12 less than the Rockets (39-51).
The explanation? It is provided by PJ Tucker: “ We have to be more physical, period. We’ve said it all year but we have to be more physical. We have to strike first, be more aggressive on the delay screens and help each other. He’s not always the guy the screen is actually on. It’s more about the help, the guy behind him, and being on the same page. »
Despite the size of Joel Embiid who, for the first time since his rookie season, is not shooting ten strikes per game, the 76ers are one of the worst teams in the league in terms of rebounds: 28th in rebounds captured (41 average over 100 possessions) and 20th in rebounds conceded (44).
For Doc Rivers, this question of the rebound is also linked to a broader defensive context. The coach takes the example of Ja Morant’s circle attacks the other night, which sometimes allowed Steven Adams to gorge on the offensive rebound (10 takes!).
” A dribbling penetration is what creates the offensive rebounds because the big helps. Against Memphis, if Joel is going to help, Steven Adams takes the rebound. No other player on the team can keep him out of the circle. That’s why he’s so good. He’s a great offensive rebounder overall. judge the technician.
Who says penetrations, says being able to hold the opponent’s dribble. A problem that applies as much against Ja Morant as against Jalen Green and Kevin Porter Jr, authors of 51 points between them against Philadelphia. Tari Eason, Alperen Sengun and Bruno Fernando were thus able to “help themselves” near the circle.
” I thought Houston beat us on the dribble the whole game. The crime is getting beat in the dribble, the crime is the offensive rebounds “ formulate Doc Rivers. Reaction expected Friday against the Lakers.
