Among the many records of LeBron James, there are those that concern Christmas. No one played more matches (17) nor scored points (460) on December 25 than him. This year, the Lakers winger even has the opportunity to seize the winning record alone (10 currently), which he shares with Dwyane Wade, his former Miami teammate.
It all started on December 25, 2003 for the “King”. During his first season, and two months after his first match, he was invited to play in Orlando on Christmas Day, to face Tracy McGrady, the league's top scorer last season, and who would be again in 2003/04.
The two men will engage in a superb duel, with 34 points for the young rookie from Cleveland and 41 points and 11 assists for the Magic All-Star. It is the second who will have the last word in overtime, with 6 units when LeBron James does not score in these five additional minutes.
Tracy McGrady impressed by young phenom
But if there is a defeat for Cleveland, with a score of 113-101, the future top scorer in NBA history will leave Florida with gifts: compliments from T-Mac.
” He is incredible. He's not 18, that's not possible.”declared McGrady at the time for ESPN. “If he continues to work and starve, he may become awful. It's scary how good he can get. Just look at it. The calm, the confidence he has on the pitch. He has this very particular style. »
It is also the presence of the rookie phenomenon which motivated the Orlando player for this December 25, which he would have preferred to spend under the tree. “It’s Christmas and I wish I was home with my family, but my job is to be there and be good. And when a player like LeBron comes to town, with the hype surrounding him, everyone is going to watch the game. »
How did LeBron James approach the first “Christmas Game” of his career? “I play every match the same way, regardless of the opponent or the team facing me. I'm trying to help my team.”he replies.
Twenty years after this first Christmas match, “King James” will be on the floor again this evening, for the 18th time, with a duel against the Celtics at 11 p.m.
