Yankees-Rays: the benches empty twice in the same inning

It is well known, the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays do not particularly like each other.

And the two rival formations proved it once again in their series this weekend.

The tension between the two teams first started on Friday night as Jonathan Loaisiga hit Yandy Diaz. He hasn’t played since.

Then, in their matchup yesterday (Sunday), it all happened again when Bronx Bombers reliever Albert Abreu hit slugger Randy Arozarena. It was the fourth time a Rays player was hit by a Yankees pitcher during the game.

It did not take less for Arozarena to start shouting at Abreu, while remaining at home plate. A scuffle ensued where the benches were emptied, where words were exchanged, but where no punches were given.

On the next pitch, the Rays outfielder flew to second base, earning the larceny. Then a few pitches later, he did it again by stealing third base.

But that was not enough for Arozarena. Of course, he had to taunt his opponent, which resulted in another altercation between the two benches, with the same result, no punches and no expulsion.

Seconds later, Brandon Lowe’s double propelled Arozarena to the plate, making it 7-4 in favor of the Rays.

The Yankees would eventually lose the game by the same score and thereby the series to Tampa Bay. They now have a record of 62 wins against 68 losses this season and find themselves eleven games away from the last place giving the right to a participation in the playoffs in the American League.

For their part, the Rays approached two small games of the Baltimore Orioles and the head of the division.

It was unfortunately the last clash between the two protagonists in 2024.

  • All is well in San Diego.
  • It won’t be easy for Shohei Ohtani and a team to sign a contract.
  • Ranking: it’s tight.
