The descent into hell of the New York Yankees continues.
Indeed, after being swept away by their eternal rivals in Boston, the Bombers (who drop water or cocktail bombs these days) have once again taken down the flag, this time against the Washington Nationals.
Speaking of bombs, the final score of 2-1 was the result of three long solo balls, the difference being CJ Abrams in the top of the eighth inning.
The Yankees haven’t had a game lead since last Monday, in eight days. That puts them among MLB’s elite in that regard, as it ties the longest such streak in the Majors this season and is the longest such streak for the Yankees since 2000.
To add to it, it was the ninth loss in a row for manager Aaron Boone’s squad, a first since 1982 for the Yankees.
This horrible streak is one of the eleven longest losing streaks in Yankees history and it also brings them closer to the worst such streak in franchise history.
The 1908 Yankees had a twelve-game losing streak, while a few years later an eleven-game losing streak stretched between 1911 and 1912, and then another came in 1913.
Then there are eight different nine-game losing streaks, including the 2023 one.
With a record of 60 wins against 65 losses, the Yankees are headed briskly for their first losing campaign since 1992. Plus, they haven’t finished last in their division since 1990, which is likely to happen this season. .
Yet, listening to owner Hal Steinbrenner, everything seems to be swimming in oil. His father must be rolling in his grave right now.
- Real leaders in Chicago…or not.
- A good start in the AAA for Jasson Dominguez.
- The Phillies escape with the victory in the bottom of the ninth inning.
