The New York Yankees have a rich history. They have many (too many?) issues retired because of their rich history, precisely.
But there is one number that is not retired: #13 of Alex Rodriguez.
Obviously, we all know that A-Rod was a great ball player and that his 12 campaigns in Bomber pajamas left their mark on baseball.
We also know that he did it in the role of the villain alongside Derek Jeter, who had the role of shortstop, captain and nice guy.
This means that, in his eyes, he does not have the recognition he believes he deserves. For example, he would like to enter the Hall of Fame…
And he would like to see the Yankees retire his number #13.
He truly believes he deserves his place at Momument Park with the other immortals of the New York Yankees organization… including Derek Jeter.
But he’s not there. And it bothers him.
Yes, obviously it bothers me. (…) I didn’t like seeing Joey Gallo receive #13 in New York.
– Alex Rodriguez
In his eyes, criticizing the Yankees in his work as a television analyst (alongside Jeter, in fact) doesn’t help his cause. Maybe he has a point.
But between you and me, the fact that he was a polarizing player and THE face of the steroid scandal in the MLB means that he will not get the recognition he wants.
He received the longest suspension in baseball history for doping, which is no small thing. And for the Yankees, it’s clearly a hindrance when it comes to honoring him.
A-Rod better not hold his breath because I think he can wait a long time.
