Last year, the New York Yankees were one of the teams that paid the most luxury tax. We are talking about an amount of $32.4 million.
The Mets, at $100 million, were in a class of their own, obviously. But otherwise, the Yankees and the Padres (nearly $40 million in luxury tax) also tasted it.
Five other teams paid, to a lesser extent, the luxury tax. But no one has done it at the same level as clubs in New York and like San Diego.
The question therefore arises: what awaits us, in this regard, in 2024?
The Mets will still have big expenses, obviously. The Padres slashed their payroll and the Dodgers gave fat cut.
What about the Yankees? They will not spend less in 2024 than in 2023.
It is clear that a club that counts on Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole, Giancarlo Stanton and Carlos Rodon necessarily has big expenses.
Just these five guys will make $162M in 2024.
Obviously, transactions can change the situation. That said, the additions of Juan Soto, Trent Grisham, Alex Verdugo and Marcus Stroman will weigh heavily in the balance.
Even if some guys have left, the payroll ($296 million in 2023) is expected to rise beyond the $300 million mark in 2024.
This is unheard of in the Bronx.
More than ever, with Cole and Judge in their prime, With Soto in town and the last World Series coming up, expectations will be high in New York.
Another top pitcher could therefore be added to the lineup down the road. This is not to be neglected, that.
This will be followed in the coming months, all that. After all, we may talk about the Dodgers, but New York also wants to regain its throne.
