In recent days, the big dominoes in the free agent market are starting to fall in MLB. After seeing guys like Jacob deGrom (Rangers), Justin Verlander (Mets), Trea Turner (Phillies) and Aaron Judge (Yankees) signing, top-tier players are starting to become scarce in the market.
And now, at the end of the evening, it is the Padres’ turn to strike a blow, when they have agreed with Xander Bogaerts on the terms of an 11-year, $280 million contract.
Since the start of the autonomy, we feel that the Padres are hungry and that they want to get their hands on one of the big names on the market. Tonight, that’s exactly what they’re doing, as they get quite the ball player in Bogaerts.
The 11-year deal is pretty dizzying for a guy who just turned 30, but again, we mostly want to get a good return from him for the early years of the deal. And with Manny Machado having an exit option next winter, he needs to be given reasons to stay in town.
More details to come…
