Canada is unfortunately eliminated from the World Classic. The guys played four games during which they surprised many people from the baseball world.
Obviously the loss of Freddie Freeman hurt in the end, but hey.
Having a veteran like him no doubt helped the youngsters to progress. So, the group can meet again in four years to try to do better.
And there will be more experience since in 2023 the guys were young.
Among the players who have done well, we note Tyler O’Neill, Owen Caissie… and Édouard Julien. After all, the Quebecer played well at second base and hit as usual, like a pro.
In fact, at the time of this writing, he leads the tournament in OPS in average trail time and batting power.
With its two circuits, it helps. But in addition, the one who is used to often going to the cushions has not changed at the World Classic.
He went on base 12 times (seven hits and five walks total) in four games. Still, huh?
His average of .538 is not embarrassing, we agree.
I know the context of the Classic is not the same as that of training camps, but his performances cannot have played against whoever wants to be recalled by the Twins.
It’s the same thing for other Quebecers, by the way.
With Otto Lopez looking to be the 26th man in Toronto, his .294 GAA, .921 OPS, five hits and six RBIs, a Canadiens-high, are well regarded.
I can’t help but think that one more shortstop in Toronto would bring some depth to John Schneider.
And what about Abraham Toro? After all, when Freddie Freeman fell in action, he was the one who was installed as the second batter.
An average of .333, an OPS of .812, five hits and three RBIs, it’s a good contribution for anyone who wants to convince the Brewers to make room for him. He did well.
As for Phillippe Aumont, who was not there for the same reasons as his Quebec counterparts, we are still talking about a solid performance for a guy who left his farm to come and represent Canada.
His four strikeouts rank him second in the nation this year. He averaged 3.00 in two outings and was used to put out fires. He only gave up two hits in all.
We can be proud of the performance of the Quebecers at the tournament.
