This afternoon, Canada and Mexico faced off with the stakes of advancing to the next level of the World Classic. It was a good challenge for Canada…especially without Freddie Freeman.
But clearly, Mexico was too strong. It ended at 10-3, which sounded the death knell for the Canadian squad.
Unless Colombia win against the Americans in a huge attacking festival… but that’s unlikely.
What particularly sank Canada was the performance of Randy Arozarena. The outfielder, who took advantage of Austin Barnes’ intentional walks, hit the ball twice for safety, good for five RBIs.
Of the lot? A home run and a three-run double.
The double was significant since at that time the score was 3-2. But under the hit, it became 6-2.
And from there, Mexico never looked back.
So this is (presumably) the end for Canada. And during these matches, the Quebecers of the club looked good. Édouard Julien, Abraham Toro, Otto Lopez and Phillippe Aumont did the work that was asked of them, which is ideal.
They learned a lot for the rest of their careers. I am obviously talking about position players since Aumont will return to his farm in Gatineau.
We will follow the round of medals, which will be very tough, knowing that Canada still did the best it could. And given the expectations, this is not negative at all.
- Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went to encourage his Dominican teammates.
- Bo Naylor learned from Russell Martin.
- Freddie Freeman, who didn’t play today, should start the Dodgers season on time.
