The Atlanta Braves entered their game last night (Wednesday) with a record of 95 wins against 50 losses, the best in the league. They held a 16-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East.
We therefore knew that the title of the division was only a formality. And now it’s done.
The Georgia team was already the first major league baseball team to secure a place in the playoffs this season and with its 4-1 victory against the Phillies, the East title is in the bag for a sixth consecutive year, since the arrival of Ronald Acuna Jr. in the MLB.
With sixteen games remaining in the regular season and seventeen games in advance, this is quite an accomplishment, considering the strength of the division that was expected at the start of the campaign.
Atlanta undoubtedly has the best team in major league baseball this season, and perhaps even a better version than the 1995 Braves.
It will therefore be interesting to see if a team can solve the riddle during the playoffs.
If the race for the Eastern title is a closed file in the National League, it is a completely different story when it comes to those in the last places giving right to a place in the fall dance.
Indeed, six clubs are four games apart, with the Miami Marlins and San Francisco Giants currently out of the playoff picture, but only half a game behind the Cincinnati Reds and the San Francisco Giants. Arizona Diamondbacks.
For their part, the Cubs still have a chance to win the Central Division title, although the chances of that happening remain slim, since the four-game gap will be difficult to overcome.
This will therefore give the right to a whole end of the season.
