As you know, the fight for the services of Aaron Judge is mainly between the Yankees and the Giants. They are the two most aggressive clubs for his services.
And I have a feeling the best offer will come from the Giants, who are pushing hard to sign Judge.
But don’t overlook the Dodgers in all of this. Many informants link the California training to the Judge, but it is not known to what extent the fit is serious.
First, the club does not often give long contracts. If he signs for LA this winter, the #99 could have a huge annual salary, but not for long.
Second, it would involve moving Mookie Betts to second base.
But more importantly, as Jon Morosi mentioned, the Dodgers could decide, instead, to save money for Shohei Ohtani.
After all, the Dodgers may have the money, but they won’t (potentially) be able to afford Judge AND Ohtani (the All-American’s top two players of 2022) in the space of a year. It’s too much.
If the club feels it has a chance to keep the go-to hitter (and pitcher) in the Los Angeles corner, that could cause management to drop the Judge file in an attempt to sign Ohtani.
Obviously, Ohtani is not yet free as the air: he will be in a year. We all suspect that he will want to leave the Angels in order to go to a good team.
Short of being traded in this summer and prolonging the fun, all indications are that the range market is waiting for it. And if that’s the case, yes, the Dodgers will definitely be in the picture.
