Just last week, the White Sox fired general manager Rick Hahn and executive vice president Kenny Williams. Hahn had worked for the Illinois squad since 2002, and Williams since 1992.
Hahn had become chief executive in 2012, succeeding Williams, who held that position until his promotion to executive vice president.
And now we know their successor. Indeed, the White Sox have just announced the promotion of Chris Getz to the position of senior vice president and general manager of the team.
This means that Mike Rizzo of the Washington Nationals and James Click of the Toronto Blue Jays were not selected.
In a press release, the White Stockings explain why Getz was the lucky one.
Chris brings a wealth of knowledge and experience within our organization to this role. Most importantly, he knows our players, both at the major league level and in our system, knows our staff, and knows all aspects of our baseball operations department.
It is true that Getz knows all the inner workings of the White Sox, but will an inside member be able to change this mentality that has been lacking for so many years? Only the future will tell us.
The 40-year-old was the team’s assistant general manager and looked after player development in the minor leagues for the past five seasons.
Originally drafted by the White Sox as a player in 2002, he played two seasons in Chicago before playing four campaigns with the Kansas City Royals from 2010 to 2013 and the last of his career with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2014.
Speaking of the Jays, former Blue Jays member John Gibbons approves of Chicago’s pick.
We don’t know if this is good news or not for the White Sox…
