Ronald Acuna Jr. is having a dream season so far in 2023. In his game yesterday (Monday) against the Colorado Rockies, the outfielder added four hits and five RBIs to his record.
He also stole two bases, bringing his total to 61 this season. When he hits his next home run, he will become the first player in history to hit 30 homers and steal more than 60 bases.
But that’s not quite what caught the eye in yesterday’s game at Coors Field.
Indeed, just before the end of the seventh inning, a fan ran up to the Atlanta Braves star and appeared to try to give him a hug. As security attempted to catch this fan on the loose, another bystander also jumped onto the field and made contact with Acuna Jr., knocking him to the ground.
Several Braves players and coaches ran to right field to help the 25-year-old and security personnel. Fans were eventually subdued and taken off the field by stadium security.
Fortunately, no unfortunate consequences ensued as to the state of health of the star player, who remained in the match which ended in a convincing victory of 14 to 4.
After the encounter, Acuna Jr. said he felt fine and fans were trying to get a photo with him. Funny way to ask for a snapshot…
For their part, the two managers, Brian Snitker and Bud Black, decried the events, affirming that this kind of scary and potentially dangerous situation should not happen, no matter where across MLB.
Hopefully the protagonists will get what they deserve. A short night in the shade might make them think.
