When the Boston Red Sox signed Trevor Story, it was a shortstop insurance policy. If ever Xander Bogaerts had to leave, at least the former Rockies was there.
But ultimately, with Bogaerts leaving for California and Story’s surgery, the Sox found themselves with uncertainty in the middle of the infield.
Of course, when Story is going to recover from his elbow surgery (which looks a lot like a Tommy John), it will help the whole thing. But right now he is in no condition to do so.
That said, the Sox don’t just need him defensively; they also need him batting. After all, he has a good stick.
This is why the club would like, as much as possible, to advance his return to the game, in order to take advantage of his talent.
Alex Cora explained that Story might come back before he was able to play defensively. We are therefore talking here about a role of choice hitter.
What you need to know is that a player who undergoes such elbow surgery can return to hitting long before returning to throw.
For what? Mechanical issue in the arm.
This is the reason why Shohei Ohtani had made a comeback as a DH before doing so as a pitcher a few years ago.
It’s also why Bryce Harper doesn’t play on the right, but he can still hit everyday as a DH.
A strong comeback from Story would make the Sox a more dangerous team offensively speaking. And in a division as tough as the East of the American, it is taken well.
Note that there is not necessarily a schedule as such which has been unveiled by the Boston club concerning the midfielder.
