Theo Epstein is back in Boston

Theo Epstein's reputation is well established.

Indeed, in the nine years he managed the Chicago Cubs, the executive did great things, including bringing the World Series championship back to the Windy City in 2016 after a wait of more than 100 years.

Epstein did the same thing by ending a long drought in Boston while managing the Red Sox, winning two titles from 2003 to 2011.

And now the main party returns to Massachusetts, but this time in the role of co-owner. The former Bas Rouges general manager has returned to the organization, becoming a shareholder in Fenway Sports Group and joining the team in the role of senior advisor.

At FSG, Epstein will work on sports initiatives across the company's assets, which include Liverpool FC, the Pittsburgh Penguins, RFK Racing, TGL Boston Common Golf and a recently acquired stake in the PGA Tour, in addition Red Sox of course.

When the 50-year-old left the Cubs to work in the MLB commissioner's office, it was expected that if he returned to a major league baseball team, it would be in an ownership role, and that's exactly what happened.

Even though Epstein leaves the commissioner's office, he will continue to work informally with the league's competition committees. He is the one behind the rule changes that came into effect in 2023.

His presence in the Boston organization will certainly not do any harm. It was he who hired Craig Breslow with the Cubs, who is now the current head of baseball operations for the Red Sox and in whom he has full confidence.

Maybe this will reduce the discontent that is plaguing Boston at the moment. Or not.
