In the last few months, before looking for a GM, the Mets were looking for a president of baseball operations. It didn’t work and they turned to a GM, in this case Billy Eppler.
But the Mets didn’t give up. After all, they were never able to chat with David Stearns for the presidency of the club since the Brewers did not agree to have their president pass an interview for the same position, but in New York.
But the Mets, in the end, don’t know if Stearns wants the job in New York or not. The New York native might want the job in order to get home.
The Mets have therefore not abandoned the project … and that’s good since the main interested party could become a free agent at the end of the year.
How? ‘Or’ What? If the Brewers make it to the World Series in 2022, he will be a free agent. Otherwise, he will be tied to the Brewers in 2023.
Getting to baseball’s biggest stage would make owners anxious, I imagine…and on the other hand, a Championship Series between the Brewers and a club other than the Mets would make Steve Cohen’s club would take for Wisconsin.
Reminder: It’s unclear if Stearns wants the job in New York. He’s good in Milwaukee, let’s not forget that.
That said, Billy Eppler wouldn’t cry if his friend took over as president of the club and the Mets, who have money, love his credibility… To be continued?
