In the world of sport, when things are going badly, it is the manager/coach who is targeted first. After all, it’s easier to change a guy than a whole club. Or to change the DG…
But sometimes, we judge that we need stability.
At the Mets, it is precisely what has just been done by Billy Eppler, the DG of the formation, towards Buck Showalter, whose head is put at price by certain fans in Queens.
The GM didn’t say all was well, but that the club had faith in Showalter to get the Mets back on the winning track.
This was done before yesterday’s game, which was won by the Mets 5-1 in Pittsburgh. Kodai Senga (seven innings) was excellent, too.
But it was only the second victory of the month. After starting the month with a W against Philly, the Blue Jays and Braves swept the following series.
And since New York gave the Pirates 14 points on Friday, that was seven straight losses.
We should not necessarily be surprised to see the Mets not brewing everything. After all, Steve Cohen does not panic and he does not want to do like George Steinbrenner with the Yankees in time.
In fact, he obviously wants to do more like Hal, his son who is now at the head of the Bronx Bombers: be patient.
It’s not like pumping MORE money into the club is going to save everything anyway, is it?
The club will therefore, if we trust public words, continue to trust a manager who was put in place because of his experience.
But we also know this: if things go wrong and he finally loses his job, he will not have been the first to receive the famous kiss of death.
