Yesterday, the Marlins took the baseball world by surprise by designating for summons (DFA) Quebecer Charles Leblanc. Why?
Because the club had to make room on its roster of 40 players.
He was DFA, even though he hit better than other young prospects who arrived in major league baseball. It’s not exactly fair, but it’s the reality.
Obviously, Miami wants to give its young top prospects every chance to make the organization look good…and that comes at the expense of a guy who produces well.
The club therefore has a week to decide what to do with the Laval player (bring him back, send him to the minors, trade him, release him, send him on waivers, etc.) from now on.
And according to reports, the club would try to exchange him, which makes sense under the circumstances.
Many well-placed people on Twitter seem to believe that Leblanc has the tools to find a job. Whether through the AAA or in the Majors directly, it is to be desired.
I wonder if Don Mattingly, Charles’ former manager in Miami, is going to place a good word for him in Toronto, where there’s room for some depth…
Let’s hope that the Quebecer, who is a good hitter and a versatile defensive player, is able to find himself on a team that will give him a true chance.
If he has his chance, he can succeed in establishing himself in the Majors by playing like last year.
