We are already in the second half of this off-season and nevertheless, an MLB club has still not moved this winter.
It is of course the Chicago Cubs.
However, it's not as if the Bears don't have needs to address after two years of rebuilding and a 2023 campaign that ended with a record of 83 wins against 79 losses.
Add in the departures of outfielder Cody Bellinger, third baseman Jeimer Candelario and starting pitcher Marcus Stroman and you have a team that should have made some personnel moves by now.
However, nothing to report in the Windy City.
It is therefore high time that the Cubs staff woke up, and quickly. It's not just by overpaying for a manager, even one of the caliber of Craig Counsell, that the magic will happen.
It's true that one of the reasons it's dead calm in Chicago is that the Cubs have several prospects expected to contribute in 2024. Center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong and left-handed pitcher Jordan Wicks made their debuts last year and will continue to improve.
But that's not enough in a National League that includes the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers.
There are still about seven weeks until spring camp, which gives the Cubs plenty of time to complete their roster. Moreover, the training of Illinois is still at the heart of the Derby Bellinger, but a bidding war with the San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays is taking place.
So it's not time to panic in Chicago yet, but whatever plan they have, if they have one, the Cubs need to implement it sooner rather than later.
