Every time Clarke Schmidt steps on the mound plate for the New York Yankees, you can bet a small two that the game will end in a loss to the Bronx Bombers. Don’t bet your house though, because a miracle can happen, as evidenced by his only win of the season against the poor Oakland A’s.
Once again yesterday afternoon (Sunday), Schmidt cost his team the victory, allowing seven earned runs in just four and two-thirds innings of work.
The Yankees batters tried somehow to close the gap that the gunner had dug, but in vain, ultimately losing by the score of 8-7 to the Tampa Bay Rays.
Schmidt currently has a stellar 6.30 earned run average and a 1.65 WHIP. A disaster.
He is clearly not the solution and has had ample opportunity to assert himself as leaving with results that speak for themselves. As the Quebec expression says so well: nothing but seeing, we can see well.
So why not try something else? Only Brian Cashman can answer that, though we’re not sure he can…
It is true that Luis Severino is approaching a return to play and that will ensure that Schmidt will end up where he needs to be, which is in the bullpen – at least, I hope so. But in a division as tough as the American League East, every game matters, especially against sectional rivals like yesterday.
The young Will Warren is doing well at the AA level at the moment and could bring a breath of fresh air to this starting rotation which badly needs it. The Yankees would then have to release Albert Abreu to make him a roster spot, which wouldn’t be a big loss.
The solution is there, you just have to implement it. Will Brian Cashman put his panties on? Only the future will tell us.
