The pitcher dial is such a big change in major league baseball. After all, it means that there are matches that are much shorter.
On average, we are talking about 30 minutes less per game.
But there are obviously disadvantages. For example? It is more difficult, for a player who is welcomed in a stadium where he has had success, to receive the applause of the crowd.
And that, the players know it.
The last example listed is that of Cody Bellinger. As the former Dodgers returned to Los Angeles for the Cubs, he received a warm welcome from the crowd before the game, but he also received warm applause on his first turn at bat.
And he finally got an automatic take because he wasn’t ready for the first shot.
Obviously, this angered everyone since in a case like this the dial prevented a beautiful moment in the world of sport. It is not what it is supposed to give, as a result.
Scott Boras, who represents Bellinger’s interests as an agent, even called Major League Baseball to say how upset he was about the situation.
What you have to understand is that MLB has a protocol for these situations. Teams must notify the referees before the game if anything is planned.
Note that I do not blame the referees in all this. You don’t knock on the messenger, in life.
That said, it’s obvious that MLB looks bad in such a case. After all, even Dave Roberts asked the referees to stop the dial to let his former MVP get a cheer from the Los Angeles crowd. But since it wasn’t done before the game…
A solution will have to be found to leave more power to the referees in order to give them the power to stop the dial when it is time.
