Over the past few months, the St. Louis Cardinals have lost numerous starting pitchers. Result? They had a rotation to rebuild.
It started with Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson, but as my colleague Pascal Harvey pointed out over the weekend, it wasn’t enough.
And the Cards knew that.
According to Jon Heyman, the St. Louis club and pitcher Sonny Gray are expected to put the finishing touches on a contract that will bring the pitcher to town.
Gray is one of the most exciting free agents on the free agent market. Without being Yoshinobu Yamamoto or Blake Snell, Gray is an excellent pitcher.
In 2023, with the Twins, he had the best season of his career – and all this at 33 years old. He finished behind Gerrit Cole in the Cy Young race with a 2.79 ERA in 184 innings of work.
He passed 183 guys in the mitt in his second season with the Twins.
Miles Mikolas, Gray, Lynn and Gibson will ensure that the base of the Cardinals rotation won’t exactly be young.
Remember that the 2023 season was very difficult in Saint-Louis. The club is undoubtedly hoping that having a few new starters will change things.
But if Gibson and Lynn are question marks, let’s say that the arrival of Gray will bring a good dose of stability within the formation.
- Will Juan Soto stay in San Diego in 2024? Hector Gomez thinks his chances are good.
- Rafael Lantigua lives in Toronto.
- Depth in Boston.
