Shohei Ohtani: Don’t dismiss Steve Cohen and the Mets too quickly

The New York Mets tried to play with the big guys, but they got burned. The club was forced to embark on a rebuilding process after the failure of 2023.

Clearly, the club had bet on the wrong horses.

The new plan is to organize to be full of hopes in 2023 and 2024 to try to win, at the earliest, in 2025.

That said, 2026 is more realistic. This means that we are not on the eve of seeing the Mets fight to try to win the World Series.

But could plans change again? Of course yes. After all, if Steve Cohen agreed to do a 180 degree despite all the investments, anything is possible.

But for that, he would have to have the right reason to do so.

The question I want to ask is this: could the Mets owner revise his game plan if the Mets ever feel they have a chance with Shohei Ohtani?

Ken Rosenthal asks us to keep it all in mind.

Is he saying the Japanese will go to New York? No, that’s not what the informant is saying.

But Cohen should never be taken out of the race.

If anyone thinks Cohen is going to pass on the opportunity to sign the greatest player of our generation and possibly in history, he hasn’t followed suit.

It is true that Shohei Ohtani is a special case. Signing him would completely transform the organization… and if anyone can afford Ohtani, it’s Cohen.

But OK. Because Ohtani wants to stay in the West, because he wants to win and because he doesn’t have money as his #1 priority, don’t expect him in New York.

He did not want to go there in 2017-2018 and that will not change, in my opinion.

I see him staying in Anaheim more for comfort than going to New York.. and I don’t see him staying in Anaheim. That says a lot about the Mets’ chances, but the club would do well to give it a try.

At worst, if it doesn’t work, Steve Cohen could perhaps turn to my colleague Sébastien Berrouard. Rumor has it that he hit his first homer in four years yesterday in his ball league.

Francisco Alvarez better watch his back…

  • 14.3 seconds to go around the bases?
  • The Mariners trade their closer in the heat of the playoffs… and they escape advances? Surprise.
  • 11 outs on strikes… but Max Scherzer wants nothing to do with the one got via an automatic strike.
  • Yu Darvish: The Japanese with the most Ks in MLB.
  • The Orioles are good at developing players.
