The San Diego Padres were supposed to make a decision on their next manager before the end of last week.
But as was the case for their championship promises at the start of the 2023 campaign, supporters of the Californian team have had to be patient, since the announcement has still not been made. Are you surprised?
It seems, however, that it is now a matter of days, because the next skipper of the Padres will be named by the middle of this week.
We’ll believe it when we see it…
If former St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Shildt is seen by many as the favorite to get the job, he is not alone in the race.
Indeed, Ryan Flaherty, Benji Gil and Phil Nevin, who just lost his job with the Los Angeles Angels, are the other known names on San Diego’s list of candidates.
Not to mention David Ross, who was courted by the New York Yankees for a position as bench coach, but who wants to take the manager position if he returns so quickly to major league baseball after being fired by the Cubs from Chicago.
The longtime MLB catcher played for the Padres for part of the 2005 season and had former Padres manager Andy Green as his bench coach in Chicago for the past four seasons.
Other names are also being considered in San Diego, but remain in-house for now.
True to form, general manager AJ Preller is very difficult to read, which isn’t always good news. It is therefore impossible to predict which avenue will be taken by the Padres this week.
