Since his last Major League game in 2019, Russell Martin has been away from baseball. He left Los Angeles to take care of his family and he loves it.
But clearly, he remains a ball guy. And as everyone says, he has the seed of a manager in him, which means that one day, we could clearly imagine him in such a role.
This is often the case with receivers, but he was really good at running a game.
And like he recently told the John Gibbons podcasthis former manager in Toronto, returning to Team Canada at the World Classic has given him a taste for baseball.
The one who was a guest coach for Canada enjoyed returning to the heat of the action after a few years away from baseball. Coming back to a dugout sparked a little something.
But does that mean a comeback is imminent? Not necessarily, no.
I always told myself that when my daughters went to school, I would think about going back to school.
–Russell Martin
He doesn’t want to wait too long so he doesn’t “become a baseball dinosaur” (especially with the rapidly changing new rules), but he does want some family time.
And since her youngest is not yet a year old…
In the eyes of John Gibbons, who let Martin lead the Blue Jays in their last game together in Toronto in 2018, it’s clear the Quebecer has what it takes.
We also feel that Gibbons was really Russell’s favorite manager during his career.
Martin opens the door, in the meantime, to getting his feet wet in the middle by being, for example, a guest coach at the Blue Jays camp or something like that.
But it is not tomorrow the day before that he will replace John Schneider or Dave Roberts, for example.
