Carlos Correa in Houston for a year?
More and more, the file of Carlos Correa makes talk. The shortstop, who recently put his Houston home up for sale, is said to be in talks with the Astros again. That’s what the big names in the team have confirmed.
But we will remember that the Astros did not want to offer him too long a contract. Could it therefore be on the basis of a one-year contract only? Ken Rosenthal raised the possibility.
Would Carlos Correa sign a one-year deal? Latest notes column: https://t.co/4uqM4ytTqc
—Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) March 14, 2022
Right now, Correa’s name isn’t circulating in New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles: it’s still circulating in Houston.
In what world could Correa sign in Houston when Freddie Freeman wouldn’t return to Atlanta?
Short. Right now, several scenarios are on the table for Correa: one-year contract (at $45 million, perhaps), six-year contract with an exit option in one year, long-term contract, etc.
And a short-term deal would help his new agent (Scott Boras) make big cash in a year…
ace @Buster_ESPN reported, Correa’s previous agency would be in position to claim a majority of whatever he gets in a multi-year deal. If Correa signs for one year now, new agent Scott Boras gets all $ of a new deal next winter. https://t.co/TXMS6MJyZS

Right now, the Astros don’t seem to have a solid big plan B at shortstop if it isn’t Correa.
Nothing seems impossible for the Astros, who don’t want anything to rebuild.
Agents have been predicting for weeks that Correa could take a deal in the range of six years with the Astros, at a high salary, with an opt-out after the first year. Mitigates some of the risk for him, and HOU would get a key player back. Crane has no interest in rebuilding.

Being a free agent a year from now would make him a coveted free agent in a class of shortstop players that would be impressive.
It looks like the caliber of this year’s if Correa joins it.
If Carlos Correa takes a deal with the Astros that allows him to test the market again next fall, here’s some of the FA shortstops he’ll join:
Tim Anderson
Trea Turner
Xander Bogaerts, if he opts out of his deal. (Bogaerts represented by Scott Boras, like Correa)
Dansby Swanson—Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) March 14, 2022
Remember that Correa always wanted to stay in Houston. But what he wants more than to stay in Houston is to be paid his fair value, which was not the case with the offers before the work stoppage.
To be continued, therefore.
Big clubs in the Trevor Story derby
The other big name in shortstop, Trevor Story, seemed to have a less buoyant market. But in fact, several clubs are on his case.
Note first that the Twins, who have just lost Andrelton Simmons and Isiah Kiner-Falefa, would be in the game.

But they are not the only ones. The Astros (who would obviously have a plan B, finally), the Guardians, the Cardinals and the Yankees would be in the lot.
It’s been a while since the shortstop was tied to the Yankees, who only have Kiner-Falefa to play shortstop at the moment.

I don’t know why he would sign in Cleveland, but the Cardinals could pair him, once again, with his friend Nolan Arenado, like in the Colorado era.
Besides, speaking of the Rockies, the Denver club wants more than just Jose Iglesias. The formation of Colorado would have big names in the market in the sights. We are talking about Kris Bryant, Michael Conforto and Kyle Schwarber.
The Rockies continue to search for a middle-of-the-order bat. Kris Bryant, Kyle Schwarber and Michael Conforto are among Colorado’s potential targets, per sources.

Schwarber’s name circulates in several places, of which in Toronto. Would the club intend to trade their left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. or place Schwarber as DH?
Who knows.
The Padres want to liquidate salary
Last year it was rumored that Wil Myers and Eric Hosmer were potentially up for trade. And obviously, it still is.
Freeing up salary would allow San Diego to fetch better players. The club is particularly on the file of Seiya Suzuki, whom I still see signing in Boston despite everything.
Per sources, the Padres are “aggressively shopping” both Eric Hosmer & Wil Myers.
Hosmer:
* 4 years/$60M left on deal
* Limited no-trade (can block deals to 10 teams)
* can opt out after ’22
* 10-5 rights after ’22Myers:
*owed $20M in ’22
* $20M ’23 club option ($1M buyout)— Mark Feinsand (@Feinsand) March 13, 2022
Jorge Soler in Los Angeles?
After dropping Nelson Cruz to Washington, it looks like the Dodgers could turn to another good hitter.
