Dayton Moore, who was president of baseball operations for the Kansas City Royals, lost his job today. He had been in Kansas City since June 2006 (as GM) and a year ago was promoted to president of baseball operations to make room for JJ Picollo as GM.
The latter will remain in office and will also be Executive VP. Clearly, the club wanted to give him some mileage to see what he had in his body through his promotion last year.
Moore lost his job because the Royals aren’t going anywhere and in 2022, after seeing many big prospects graduate to the Majors, the club haven’t progressed.
Moore spoke to Ken Rosenthal and he said he was happy to have had the chance to work in Kansas City for so long.
It’s unclear what that means for manager Mike Matheny.
Moore’s problem is that he managed to build a big club (which won the World Series in 2015) with Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas and Alex Gordon… but he failed to replace them properly since.
The Tigers (who recently hired Scott Harris as chairman) and the Royals have therefore both moved on after both clubs disappointed in 2022. Both teams were supposed to take a step forward, but it didn’t happen.
Moore would like to stay in the baseball world for the future. As for the Royals, we will know more about their plans shortly.
