Repechage: winners and losers

The first round of the MLB Draft took place last night (Sunday) and we can already see trends emerging.

Some teams emerged winners on the first day of the auction, while others found themselves on the wrong side of the force earlier.

Let’s start with those for whom things went well.

Boston Red Sox pick Kyle Teel can’t be overlooked. Ranked sixth by Passion MLB and seventh by MLB Pipeline, the catcher could prove to be the steal of the draft.

We can consider that the Red Stockings played luck, but they knew how to seize the opportunity to take a receiver with an exceptional slash.

Still in the American League East, two other organizations stood out, namely the Tampa Bay Rays and the Toronto Blue Jays, in ranks 19 and 20 respectively.

The former first selected shortstop and third baseman Brayden Taylor, who I saw coming out a lot sooner and maybe even smashing the top-10, mostly because of his ability to get to the trails more than regularly.

As for them, the Jays had the lucky hand by acquiring Arjun Nimmala, a powerful third base player who can play at shortstop.

On the other side of the spectrum, some formations did not have their best day at work.

Starting with the Oakland A’s, who in addition to announcing their choice under boos mixed with cries of “Sell the team”, they took a very intelligent player in the person of Jacob Wilson, but pass besides pitcher Rhett Lowder was perhaps not the best decision.

But what do you want, it’s the Oakland Athletics after all.

Then come the Kansas City Royals who seem to have made the biggest bet by betting on receiver Blake Mitchell. Again, it’s not that Mitchell’s pick is bad, but taking him past Kyle Teel is nonsense.

Let’s finish this little spin with the Seattle Mariners who had three first-round picks, but don’t seem to have managed to take advantage of this enviable position.
