The longest current winning streak belongs to the Boston Red Sox and it continued yesterday as Alex Cora’s squad defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 7-4.
With this win, a 21st this season, the Bostonians’ winning streak is now down to eight.
The Red Sox’s success this season has been a well-balanced offense that has a knack for clearing opposing starting pitchers out of the game quickly, while the team’s gunners get the job done.
That’s exactly what happened yesterday as Phillies starter Bailey Falter saw his night’s work come to an end after three and two-thirds innings after allowing five runs on six hits to the visitors. In total, manager Rob Thomson used six pitchers during this game.
In 35 games this season, the Red Sox offense has chased opposing starters 11 times before the end of the fourth inning. A pinnacle in major league baseball.
For his part, Corey Kluber, the Red Sox starter, went seven hits well spaced in five innings of work and earned his second win this season. The right-hander allowed three points for the Phillies during this outing.
In attack, once again, Rafael Devers caught the eye. The Red Sox third baseman produced his 33rd and 34th points of the season, a Major high so far.
Devers has had a rough start to the season, but he’s been running at full throttle these days as he’s started hitting the ball wide again, a key to success according to his manager Alex Cora.
Masataka Yoshida, a player making his Red Sox debut this season, took the opportunity to meet his idol Bryce Harper. A true moment that doesn’t happen often enough these days. The two athletes took the time to exchange a few memories and a few courtesies thanks to an interpreter, to the great pleasure of the Japanese.
What is reassuring at the moment for the formation of Massachusetts, is that Cora uses different formations without diminishing his chances of victory. In the past two games, the team’s most consistent hitter, Alex Verdugo, hasn’t played due to a virus, while the manager gave Masataka Yoshida a day off yesterday when he was in the middle of a 15-game hitting streak.
Let’s hope for the team’s fans that Cora has such a lucky hand over the next few weeks and months.
- Speaking of Bryce Harper.
- Lorenzo Cain was duly honored.
