On July 25, Kiké Hernandez moved from the Boston Red Sox to the Los Angeles Dodgers in return for two relievers.
Still, the first 7,500 fans to enter Fenway Park tonight will receive a bobble head of the former Bas Rouges, despite the fact that they traded the player two weeks ago.
Pretty strange, isn’t it?
According to Sox marketing director Adam Grossman, there are several reasons for this.
During his time here, Kiké had a close relationship with the fans. I think the fans felt the same. So we thought, why not give it to the fans?
And the main interested party has no problem with the situation, according to Grossman.
We contacted him after he was traded to tell him we had this coming. We were inclined to give it away as long as he was comfortable with it. And he was comfortable.
With the ultimate goal of not depriving fans of a collectible they voted for, it’s hard to blame the Red Sox.
Moreover, the bobbleheads had already been made by the time Hernández was traded and Grossman felt that letting them rot would be a monster waste.
They are ordered months in advance. They were ready to leave. We had them. I just felt like it was the right thing to do as long as Hernandez was comfortable with it.
Agreed, but the situation remains particular and this idea is very Boston.
At least Hernández wears a Puerto Rico jersey on his bobble headnot a Red Sox uniform, which team officials say made the decision easier.
And be sure that the former Sox will receive his copy, even if he cannot be present on the scene.
