Who will stop the Tampa Bay Rays?
For the 13th time in 13 games since the start of the year, Kevin Cash’s troupe has won a baseball game. This time it’s thanks to a 9-3 win over the Red Sox in Tampa Bay.
If we forget the St. Louis Maroons, who won 20 straight games in the 1800s to start the season, it’s a record (tied) of the modern era.
The 1982 Braves and the 1987 Brewers had done as well.
Never have the Rays, at any time in a season, had a streak of more than 12 straight wins. That says a lot about the start of the season.
The Rays scored 101 runs, allowed 30 runs and slammed 32 homers. Right now they are on another planet.
The whole thing is done without Tyler Glasnow. Zach Eflin got hurt (Taj Bradley did well yesterday on his debut) and today Jeffrey Springs got hurt.
But the club has resources.
The next step? The Toronto Blue Jays, who have won seven of their last eight games, but are dominating too many points these days.
Will Jose Berrios, Yusei Kikuchi or Alek Manoah be able to stop the Tampa machine? That still remains to be seen.
As of this writing, the Blue Jays and Yankees are yet to play their 13th game, but the Rays are 4.5 games ahead of them. Both teams are playing for .667 with an 8-4 record.
The Orioles (7-6) and Red Sox (5-8) are six and eight games behind Tampa Bay, respectively. Today is April 13…
