We are all waiting for the moment when there will be developments in the Rafael Devers case. Will the third baseman become a free agent in a year? Will be traded by then? Will sign a long-term contract?
At the moment, the first option is the most likely.
It’s unclear what to take from this since, at the moment, the Sox and the player’s clan are miles apart in long-term negotiations.
But the good news? In the short term, there is an agreement.
The third baseman, who is a year away from free play, was supposed to sign a contract for the 2023 season…and he did.
He will receive $17.5 million in Boston.
Since he had to sign a contract for 2023 to bring him to the gates of autonomy and he is in market prices, this is not great news in which we can read a lot.
Last year, under the same conditions, Aaron Judge signed for $19 million.
But the good news is that the Sox and Devers are negotiating and have managed to agree on an element of the contract without going through salary arbitration. There it is, the good news in the file.
But in the long run, it’s going to take a lot more than $17.5 million a year to keep it. In fact, per year, it will possibly take double ($35M) for many years…
