Late yesterday afternoon, we learned that the Boston Red Sox and Rafael Devers had found common ground on a long-term contract.
We are talking about an 11-year contract valued at $331 million.
The player doesn’t have an exit option and he doesn’t have a no-trade clause. It’s not the end of the world, however, since there will be one. de facto when he reaches 10 years of service in the MLB, including five in a row with his current formation.
And until then, the Sox aren’t going to trade him. Why? Because the club don’t want to know about letting Devers slip through their fingers. Yesterday’s financial commitment demonstrates this very well.
After dropping Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts, the club had no choice but to sign Rafael Devers on terms of a long contract. Otherwise, fans would have cried bloody murder… with good reason.
The bosses of the club have therefore taken the means to arrange for Devers to remain in town.
Will Devers be good at the end of his contract? After all, it’s a question that needs to be asked when talking about such long contracts.
But what’s nice about the contract is that Devers isn’t signed until he’s 40. In fact, he just turned 26 and is signed for 11 seasons.
He will therefore be released from his contract after his 36-year season. It’s better than contracts that take guys into their 40s.
Everything suggests that the Sox have given themselves the tools not to see Devers become a financial drag on the club, so … and at just over $ 30 million per year, it is not exaggerated according to market prices no more.
In my opinion, it’s a good contract for everyone. After all, for the club, it is not a price that is completely excessive considering market prices, Devers’ talent and his age.
I believe that if he had become a free agent in a year, he could have possibly broken the bank even more significantly.
And for Devers, let’s say that such an amount is taken well.
After all, Devers is now in possession of the sixth-biggest contract in MLB history. That’s very good for him.
We are obviously talking about the biggest contract ever offered by the Red Sox. Devers will be there to guide the youngsters pushing upfield (starting with Marcelo Mayer and Triston Casas) and he’ll be the leader going forward.
The Sox had no choice and they learned from their mistakes, especially in the Xander Bogaerts case. It was simply what had to be done.
- Devers will soon take a crowd bath.
- Xander Bogaerts is happy for his friend.
- The Marlins had Eduardo Escobar in their sights.
- It must have been interesting, as a meal.
- The former Jays finds a job.
