At the beginning of last December, it was reported that the New York Mets and Pete Alonso had still not started discussions for a contract extension… and that news still holds true at this time.
In 2024, Alonso is projected to make $21 million. The one who spent his entire career with the Mets will be 29 years old in 2024. With a record of .217, 118 RBIs and 46 home runs in 2023, Alonso shows that he still has his place in the Majors.
So what are the Mets waiting for? Could they trade him before the season starts? It doesn't seem like that's in the plans, as the team still wants to see him in the starting lineup this year.
It is worth mentioning that Alonso signed with agent Scott Boras a few months ago.
Boras has experience with the New York Mets. Not only did he negotiate Carlos Correa's deal, but he also negotiated a new contract for Brandon Nimmo when his contract with the Mets was up. Boras is therefore a regular with the Mets. Did Alonso make this decision because he wants to stay with the Mets? Everything is possible.
It will be interesting to see where Alonso will be at this time next year.
