As you know, the New York Mets have a big case in sight: that of Pete Alonso. The club’s first baseman will be a free agent in a year.
He wants to stay, but it’s unclear how much the Mets want to keep him.
Actually, that’s not true. I have a feeling the Mets want to keep him, but they don’t necessarily want to pay him all the money in the world.
However, the club has money and if there is one who knows how to handle the pressure of the New York market, it is the Polar Bear.
But OK. We’ll see what happens since I have the feeling that Pete Alonso is not going to let himself eat the wool off his back.
Why am I saying that? Because the main person involved has just changed agents and hired – yes – good old Scott “Vorace” Boras.
As you know, Boras is great at making his clients money and there is no room for loyalty in his strategy.
His game plan? Establish the value of its customers in the autonomy market.
By force of circumstances, Alonso has just taken a stand. We should expect to see him become a free agent before signing his next big long-term contract.
Does this close the door on the Mets? No. After all, they have money and Alonso wants to stay with the club for the long term.
And if that’s what he wants, Boras will listen. He did it when Carlos Correa saw his contract with the Mets fall through and was told by the shortstop to “take it home” after an intense month.
But basically, this is not good news for the Mets.
