Mookie Betts is nervous about returning to Fenway Park

It’s already been three and a half years since the Boston Red Sox sent Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers for next to nothing.

Alex Verdugo, Jeter Downs (who is now with the Washington Nationals) and Connor Wong had then come to Boston in return for the star player. It was February 10, 2020.

And for the first time in all that time, Betts will return to Fenway Park for a three-game series tomorrow (Friday), when the Los Angeles Dodgers visit Massachusetts.

While the principal is excited to return to where he played for the first six seasons of his MLB career, he’s also nervous about stepping onto the field again.

Betts discussed his emotions with teammate and former Red Sox outfielder Kiké Hernandez on the latest episode of On Base With Mookie Betts.

This will be my first time going back since 2019. I’m really nervous. I haven’t been back for so long. This is where I grew up, and I don’t know what to expect. I think it will be fun. I’m going over there and I’m going to check out the clubhouse. The clubhouse is different, lots of new faces. I’m more excited to see people, though. People are what I remember most.

Betts has said time and time again that he wants to stay in Boston and that if he had been offered the same contract as the Dodgers (12 years and $365 million), he would have stayed. But we all know that the Red Stockings would never have approached this offer.

Boston fans will finally be able to see the one who should never have left.

But he won’t be alone in making a return to Fenway, since in addition to Hernandez, Ryan Brasier will also be on the line-up. However, this will not be the case for JD Martinez, who has been placed on the injured list.
