Without really confirming or denying the thing, the director of baseball operations of the New York Mets, David Stearns, suggested that it would be difficult to get along with Pete Alonso in the long term before he tests the free agent market.
Barely arriving in Florida for training camp, Stearns was asked about the future of the “Polar Bear” with his training.
“I'm not going to go into detail with you or give you specific details about the conversation with Pete, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him test the market at the end of next season,” he maintained .
These comments come at a time when the president knows that Alonso is at a crossroads in his career, at the dawn of his thirties and that he certainly wants to play with a winning and competitive team.
Stearns also knows that Alonso will be in his final year where the team has control over his contract, having signed a $20.5 million deal in the final days to avoid arbitration.
Added to this is the fact that Pete Alonso is represented by the renowned agent Scott Boras and that with Alonso's talent, Boras will do everything to find him a place of choice, if not with the Mets.
Remember that last offseason, the Mets hired a new manager, Carlos Mendoza, after the difficult season in 2023.
They also signed deals with pitchers Luis Severino, Adrian Houser, Jorge Lopez, Michael Tonkin and Austin Adams. They had to give up on Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
They also signed Harrison Bader and Joey Wandle.
