The New York Mets’ descent into hell continued last night, as they lost their flag 2-1 to the Milwaukee Brewers.
This seventh defeat in their last ten duels gives them a record of 35 wins against 43 losses. This places the New York team in fourth place in the National League East Division, sixteen games behind the Atlanta Braves.
In the loss, pitcher Justin Verlander pitched 100 in five innings of work, allowing five hits but not allowing anyone to cross home plate.
Despite his good performance, the big right-hander did not have the heart to celebrate after the meeting.
I don’t think I saw that coming. It’s disappointing for everyone in this room, it’s disappointing for the fans. You just have to keep trying.
Indeed, one could predict that the Mets might not finish first in their section. But not many people could have predicted that they would sink so low.
It’s certainly not what Verlander expected when he signed his two-year, $86 million contract.
Granted, there’s still plenty of baseball to play, but it’s getting late for Queens reps.
Owner Steve Cohen is not expected to be a seller by the trade deadline, but it will be difficult to get them the pieces that will make this team a contender for top honors.
