Max Scherzer needs a few days off before pitching again

I always believed that while the Mets were happy to announce that Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander were going to guide their rotation in 2023, part of them were going to miss Jacob deGrom.

Everyone knows there are risks with an older rotation and right now the Mets are feeling the pinch.

For what? Because Justin Verlander hasn’t pitched yet this season and because Max Scherzer feels more and more that he is getting old.

The pitcher, who last worked April 10, won’t pitch until next Wednesday. He was supposed to pitch today against Oakland.

Because he’s in a bit of pain and feels a few days will do him good, he’s going to pitch against the Dodgers instead of the A’s today.

I guess the Mets figure they don’t need their #1 pitcher to beat Oakland, too.

In an ideal world, Scherzer is fine and the few days off will have helped. That said, with an older pitcher, there are risks for the Mets.

And it’s not like his early outings were great either… He was on the right path against San Diego, but he’s not MadMax yet.

I’m not saying we should panic, but since two starts, Jacob deGrom is doing very well. He could get hurt at any time, but right now he’s healthy.

And it shows: his stats in April are excellent after a bad outing on March 30. He has 27 strikeouts since the start of the season.

It’s too soon to say the Mets are sorry since Verlander will be returning shortly…and who knows when deGrom will have to take two months off.

But right now, Mets fans have to ask themselves questions.
