The Los Angeles Dodgers had all sorts of difficulties against the St. Louis Cardinals this weekend, with the latter having been all fired up lately.
The Cardinals won the four-game series between the two clubs, avenging the three-game sweep suffered at the hands of the Dodgers last April.
One explanation for the Dodgers’ tough weekend at Busch Stadium came from third baseman Max Muncy.
According to him, the pressure exerted by the receivers of the Cards on the officials influenced several calls during the series between the two teams.
The official calls a shot a ball, and the catcher tells him that’s a terrible call, that he missed it and needs to be better. Then the next one, he gives it to her. For me, that’s where the frustration came from. I felt like it happened all weekend.
Muncy was ejected from yesterday’s (Sunday) game at the start of the fourth inning for arguing with the officials over ball calls and strikes.
He appeared to be primarily aimed at third base umpire Paul Emmel. The latter was behind the plate during the duel the day before.
Where Muncy makes a point is that if the batters can’t argue with the official behind the plate on pain of ejection, the receivers should suffer the same fate as well.
Barring a playoff matchup, the two teams won’t face each other again this season. Too bad, since it would have given the right to an excellent show.
