Manny Machado made a lot of money with the Padres and he will continue to do so. He touched 40% of a $300 million contract before using his exit option to sign a $350 million contract.
And that’s without what he did in Baltimore, Los Angeles and in advertising.
Now that he is firmly established in San Diego and more afraid of the end of the world than the end of the month, Machado has decided to invest a little in his community.
The Miami native has decided to join the expansion group that aims to bring MLS to San Diego. He is therefore an investor in the franchise, which has been announced for the 2025 season.
It is not yet known what percentage of the team (which is not yet named) he holds, but he is part of the group.
Obviously, it’s special to see a baseball guy investing in soccer. That said, today it’s fashionable to see stars buying teams.
But above all, it’s a great business opportunity for him.
For what? Because MLS is growing like crazy. The entry price for the San Diego franchise is $500 million, which is the same price as the Vegas Golden Knights (NHL) in 2017.
The league is adding teams on a regular basis and it will see its return on investment. Guaranteed – at the rate things are going, at least.
With the Chargers moving to Los Angeles in the NFL, the Padres were the only five major league sports team in town. This is no longer the case with yesterday’s announcement – or at least, it will no longer be the case in 2025.
