The New York Mets were expected to have interest in Luis Severino, who knows the New York market well.
Well, there it is: Severino took advantage of his autonomy to change his uniform while remaining in New York. He signed a one-year contract valued at $13 million.
Does it feel weird seeing him across town? Certainly. It’s like Noah Syndergaard was playing in the Bronx.
Not only did he reunite with Carlos Mendoza, but he got a nice contract for a guy who had a difficult 2023 season.
Let’s say his 6.65 average didn’t impress anyone in 2023. He had a good career in general, sure, but…
Let’s say Steve Cohen has the deep pockets to pay $13 million (plus potential bonuses of $2 million) on a “project” for 2024. We suspected it, but…
At the same time, the Mets need starters so badly that it makes sense to think that taking a chance on Severino, at that price, is a good idea for a rich owner.
Note that this does not remove the Mets from the race for big starters, including Yoshinobu Yamamoto. David Stearns wants to get his hands on the Japanese, that’s clear.
If Severino has a good season, he can become a strong free agent again. So it’s a good bet on his side at that level. And he knows the city…
And otherwise? We’ll see in a year.
- Dylan Cease traded soon?
- Devin Williams and Felix Bautista are the relievers of the year.
