Yesterday, the first domino fell among free agents: Aaron Nola chose to continue his path in Philadelphia. We are talking about a seven-year, $172 million contract.
Teams looking for a starter must now look to other solutions. Among those? Lance Lynn.
Despite his setbacks in recent years, the St. Louis Cardinals made the decision to grant him a contract.
We are talking about a one-year contract with a second year option at the team’s discretion. He will earn at least $10 million in total and could earn around double that if he stays through 2025.
Cardinals fans aren’t necessarily the most pleased, considering Lance Lynn allows a lot of home runs. He led MLB in 2023 with 44.
He wanted to sign in Saint-Louis because he lives in the area and since the club needed starters, it worked out well.
Lynn is a former Cardinals player who pitched in St. Louis until 2017.
He is not the only starter who has found a buyer on the market. Reynaldo Lopez has decided to sign a contract with the Atlanta Braves. He will earn at least $30 million over three years.
You will tell me that Lopez is a reliever, but he has already been a starter. And what’s more, he’s going to show up at camp trying to earn a spot in the rotation.
If he doesn’t succeed, he will return to relief.
That won’t stop the Braves from trying to sign a true career starter. Is Lucas Giolito a possibility?
I name him because he and Lopez pitched together in Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles and Cleveland during their careers…
- Yoshinobu Yamamoto has 45 days to sign in the MLB starting tomorrow.
- The Phillies still want a starting pitcher.
