The Boston Red Sox have been surprising since the start of this campaign. No one knows if this will last, but players and fans are enjoying the beautiful times they are having right now.
And one of those sweet moments came last night in the Sox’s game against the Atlanta Braves, when reliever Kenley Jansen became the seventh player in MLB history to make 400 saves.
Pedro Martinez also congratulated him on his achievement.
The 35-year-old took out Sean Murphy first, before giving up a double to Eddie Rosario. Then, the right-hander retired Ozzie Albies on a ball and passed Travis d’Arnaud in the mitt to record the historic save.
It was Raimel Tapia’s double in the seventh inning and Triston Casas’ two-run homer in the ninth that gave Jansen the opportunity to make history.
Jansen now trails sixth-ranked Billy Wagner by 22 saves, who had 41 saves with the Braves last year and currently has nine in 2023.
After a day off today (Thursday), Jansen can continue his quest as the Red Stockings begin a three-game home series against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Left-handed pitcher James Paxton, who hasn’t played since 2021, will make his Boston debut.
