It was today that players eligible for arbitration had to come to an agreement with their club to avoid going to arbitration.
Players who don't get along today are unlikely to go before a referee, but the best way to avoid that is to sign today.
Obviously, all day long, there were announcements. I suggest the following link to follow everything live, in each team.
The case we followed the most? Juan Soto. He had, after all, the potential to beat Shohei Ohtani's $30 million for one year last year.
It was a record for an arbitration-eligible player.
But now, as expected, Soto beat the Japanese record. The Yankees and Scott Boras negotiated a one-year, $31 million contract, his last before becoming a free agent in a year.
Note that Pete Alonso signed for $20.5 million for 2024. They are, for the moment, the only two to have signed for $20 million.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. could have joined them, but he is obviously the only Blue Jays player who has not managed to come to an agreement with the Toronto team.
Remember that Vladdy is two years away from autonomy. Seeing him go to arbitration with the Blue Jays would not be good news.
To be continued…
