For the past few days, the battle between Jose Ramirez and Tim Anderson has caused a lot of talk in the MLB. During this one, the star of the Guardians struck the White Sox player with a good right which sent him to the ground.
Unsurprisingly, both guys were suspended today, along with a few other people involved in the case.
On the other hand, we agree that it is not simple suspensions that will make history stop talking. In Cleveland, anyway, I doubt that will be the case.
Today, for example, a Guardians fan decided to show up at the stadium wearing a personalized uniform with the #11 on it, but also the inscription Down Goes Anderson in the back.
Recall that’s what the Guardians radio descriptor yelled when the White Sox shortstop fell to the ground.
Clearly, Guardians supporters have no intention of forgetting the whole thing. But it goes further than that.
The Lake County Captains, a team in the Strong which is affiliated with the Guardians, has decided to organize a short tribute week to Jose Ramirez. For the occasion, fans named Tim will have the opportunity to sit on the stadium turf for free.
Just like Anderson, therefore, they will be entitled to spend time on the grass of the field. We hope it doesn’t come with a solid straight line from Ramirez, though.
We can understand the people who will find that it is starting to fall into bad taste, especially since we must remember that Anderson suffered a concussion during the fight. On the other hand, we are not talking either about a guy who got himself jumped on for no reason: he looked for the bickering and he found his man.
And since Anderson doesn’t even seem to want to accept Ramirez’s apology, it’s hard to see him as a sympathetic victim.
I think we’re likely to hear about this story for quite a while to come. Both in Cleveland and in the affiliated clubs, we really don’t seem to want to let history die a beautiful death.
I hope for him that Anderson had no intention of sticking too close to Cleveland in the weeks and months to come: he’s not likely to make friends in town, let’s say.
