For several years, Jasson Dominguez has been a big name in the middle of prospects across MLB. Nicknamed the Martian, he was squarely compared to Mike Trout and Mickey Mantle even before he was 18.
No pressure, youngster.
And even though he’s only 20, Dominguez was called up by the Yankees last week. In a lost season for the club, it might as well give the young outfielder some experience to find out if he will be able to contribute next year.
The good news is that the results so far are promising. He hit two homers in his first four games, including his first of his career on his first at bat against Justin Verlander.
Nothing less.
And yesterday, in his second game at Yankee Stadium, Dominguez gave his fans a reason to celebrate: In the third inning, he hit his first career home run in the Bronx.
In doing so, Dominguez hit his third long ball of the season, despite only playing five games in the Majors.
Less than a month ago he was in AA.
And when we look at his early career, we realize that he is quite historic with the Yankees. Yesterday, the Martian became the second player in Bombardiers history to hit three homers in his first five games.
The other was Shelley Duncan in 2007.
And obviously, Dominguez was not going to settle for a simple homer yesterday: he also added two singles for a night of three hits.
Especially since he demonstrated his ambidextrous hitting skills in the process.
In the end, the Yankees won by a score of 4-3. Casually, the Bombardiers are in a fifth victory in a row, so much so that they exceeded the bar of .500 with their record of 70-69.
Jasson Dominguez has never tasted defeat in MLB yet.
And when you look at the numbers of the outfielder, you realize that his career start is solid at all levels. The sample is very thin, but clearly the Yankees have reason to be optimistic.
Also note that yesterday’s victory allows the Yankees to return to 6.5 games of a ticket for the playoffs. Quietly, they repoint the end of the tip of the nose in the race, even if it is perhaps too little too late.
Series or not, it’s the show Jasson Dominguez in the Bronx, and the young man is giving fans a run for their money.
And for a club that is aware that the playoffs are more than unlikely and that tries to take the pressure off the shoulders of its manager and its general manager, it’s the best of all worlds.
- During the game, Tigers pitcher Matt Manning took a Giancarlo Stanton arrow (119.5 miles per hour, the second fastest ball of the season) on the foot. He suffered a fracture and his season is unfortunately over.
- Shohei Ohtani back tonight?
- 14 strikeouts for Tyler Glasnow.
- Ji-Man Choi and Gary Sanchez are injured.
