Jason Varitek wants to become a manager (even if it’s not in Boston)

In recent weeks, Jason Varitek’s name has been circulating for a manager position with the San Francisco Giants.

He ultimately didn’t get the job (Bob Melvin and his sudden availability changed a lot of things), but it was still a ego boost.

After all, if a club like the Giants wanted to consider him, the Red Sox employee is a quality candidate.

It’s not surprising. A former receiver and leader of his caliber, he’s the type of guy who could, if he wanted, become a manager.

We know that he is so attached to the Red Sox that one wonders to what extent he would really have left Boston to go manage another club. But hey: if Derek Jeter left the Bronx…

But the answer is that yes, he could indeed leave Boston to become a manager elsewhere in the MLB, as we learned from MassLive.

Varitek, who has been considered in the past in Seattle, is flattered by the opportunities, but he doesn’t seem unhappy in Boston.

Either way, who knows if Alex Cora will be around long term…he doesn’t seem like he’s built to handle for another five years in, say, Boston.

It’s still early and things can change, but in the meantime, Varitek will just have to do what he has to do to gain experience.

And one day, if the stars align, his luck will come.
